One Step Closer to Inclusion: Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with Siyakwazi

This World Down Syndrome Day (March 21), Siyakwazi is inviting individuals, schools, and businesses to step up for inclusion by taking part in the Lots of Socks campaign

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional chromosome is the reason March 21 was chosen as World Down Syndrome Day, symbolising the triplication of the 21st chromosome. Down syndrome affects approximately one in every 1,000 live births worldwide. While each person with Down syndrome is unique, many face challenges in accessing inclusive education and support. However, with the right resources, every child has the potential to thrive.

Siyakwazi’s Respite team and the children they support proudly showing off their socks for World Down Syndrome Day at the Resource Centre in KwaNzimakwe.

The Lots of Socks campaign is a global initiative where people wear brightly coloured, mismatched socks to raise awareness about Down syndrome and celebrate diversity. Siyakwazi, a champion for inclusive education on the South Coast, KZN, is embracing this initiative to highlight the importance of ensuring children with disabilities receive the support they need.

Smiling and playing with her socks, *Asiphe encourages everyone to join the World Down Syndrome Day celebration.

Mpume Somana, Inclusion Coordinator at Siyakwazi, shares: “Wearing different socks might seem small like a small act, but it sends a big message. It’s about celebrating differences, starting conversations, and embracing inclusion. Our Respite Play & Learn group loved getting involved. They are campaigning too! The children had so much fun, and even their parents and guardians were proud to see them taking part in something so important to Siyakwazi’s mission.”

Children supported by Siyakwazi join in the fun with their colourful, mismatched socks for World Down Syndrome Day.
